The Story of the Cross
Notes and sources for my Scripture reflection on the cross
- The insight on the "plot structure" of the biblical story is from Richard Middleton's A New Heaven and a New Earth: Reclaiming Biblical Eschatology.
- Two other sources I found very helpful were Rikk Watts' essay New Exodus/New Creational Restoration of the Image of God, and Henri Blocher's essay Agnus Victor, both published in What Does It Mean to Be Saved? Broadening Evangelical Horizons of Salvation.
- I also consulted everything I could get my hands on on the atonement. Besides Blocher’s essay, the most helpful sources I found were The Crucifixion: Understanding the Death of Jesus Christ by Fleming Rutledge, and The Reconciling Wisdom of God: Reframing the Doctrine of the Atonement by Adam Johnson.
- Before I revised the final draft, I read N. T. Wright’s The Day the Revolution Began. It was encouraging to see that we seemed very much on the same page. It had been a while since I read anything by Wright, but I had followed his work for years.
