Inhabiting God's Story
Small Group Resources
This is our initial bibliography and list of resources. I actually put together a few lists here: a thematic list, a chronological one, and a general list of resources.
First, there's a list of resources covering what I would consider "the basics," organized around an outline reflecting different aspects of our theme. This list of resources is meant as suggested readings organized thematically from which we can draw as needed.
I also created a list reflecting the various stages of the biblical Story, including church history (and world history to some extent).
Finally, there's a fuller list of resources, not organized in any particular order. That list includes most of the resources mentioned in the other lists and more. It also includes some discipleship manuals and materials, and some reflections I have written on various aspects of our theme.
A THEMATIC LIST OF RESOURCES
These resources are organized around an outline reflecting different aspects of our theme. The list shows the topics covered and the content I'd recommend. I also divided each section into two parts, one listing free online content, the other mostly chapters in books. The items that appear without the author's name are mine. They are mostly reflections I have written that summarize my initial thoughts on some of the relevant topics I have researched.

A CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF RESOURCES
These are some of the best sources I've found on each of the areas and periods in question, besides a solid Study Bible of course (like the CEB Study Bible with Apocrypha, the Faithlife Study Bible, the Fully Revised NIV Study Bible, and the The New Interpreter's Study Bible: NRSV with the Apocrypha). For devotional Bible reading, I strongly recommend the multi-volume The Books of the Bible (NIV). Here's the whole series.
Creation
- God and World in the Old Testament: A Relational Theology of Creation, by Terence E. Fretheim.
- Richard Middleton's work on creation.
- Old Testament Theology: Israel's Gospel, by John Goldingay, chap. 2: "God Began Creation."
Prehistory
- A general Introduction and good discussions on our scientific understanding of prehistory (cosmology, geology, evolution, etc.) and how it squares with the biblical account of things. Here's one of the best ones I've found: A Worldview Approach to Science and Scripture, by Carol A. Hill. And here's a more comprehensive one that could serve as a reference guide: Understanding Scientific Theories of Origins: Cosmology, Geology, and Biology in Christian Perspective, by Robert C. Bishop, Larry L. Funck, Raymond J. Lewis, Stephen O. Moshier, and John H. Walton. There are also lots of great resources at BioLogos and at Peaceful Science.
- The OER Project's Big History course is an excellent refresher on science.
- Lord of the Cosmos, by Paul Teel (the best lecture on evolution I've heard from a Christian perspective, apparently no longer available on Regent Audio, but I would contact them and ask—it should be there, probably with a different title).
- Creatures of God: Human Nature and Evolution for Evangelicals and Catholics / Being Human: Engaging the Opening Chapters of Genesis in Light of Hominid Evolution, by Paul Teel, Rikk Watts, J. Richard Middleton, Shawn Flynn.
Old Testament
- An Introduction to the Old Testament, 2nd ed., by Tremper Longman III and Raymond Dillard.
- A Theological Introduction to the Old Testament, 2nd ed., by Bruce C. Birch, Walter Brueggemann, Terence E. Fretheim, David L. Petersen
- A Biblical History of Israel, 2nd ed., by Iain Provan, V. Philips Long and Tremper Longman III
- Lecture Series: Old Testament Reloaded (talks with Q&A), by Iain Provan
- Seriously Dangerous Religion, by Iain Provan
- Audio resources: Seriously Dangerous Religion (talks with Q&A), by Iain Provan
- Ancient Secondary Sources: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, edited by Thomas C. Oden. (The whole set is available on Scribd.com, along with a huge library which I find very much worth the $9 a month subscription.)
Intertestamental Period
- The Apocrypha, in the Common English Bible and/or NRSV translations. Here's a good audio version by the American Bible Society (I saw it on Scribd too).
- Introducing the Apocrypha, or (for a briefer study) The Apocrypha (Core Biblical Studies), by David A. deSilva.
- Outside the Bible: Ancient Jewish Writings Related to Scripture, edited by Louis H. Feldman, James L. Kugel, and Lawrence H. Schiffman.
- An exploration of developments in Israel's understanding of the spirit-realm during this period?
- Note: Understanding the intertestamental period and literature is key to understanding the world of meaning implicit in the New Testament. It's also key to integrating the whole Story coherently, from creation to new creation; otherwise there's a conceptual and historical gap between the testaments.
New Testament
- The New Testament in Its World: An Introduction to the History, Literature, and Theology of the First Christians, by N. T. Wright and Michael F. Bird
- The Indelible Image: The Theological and Ethical Thought World of the New Testament, by Ben Witherington, III, vol. 1: The Individual Witnesses, and vol. 2: The Collective Witness.
- Lecture series: perhaps the audio and/or video version of Wright and Bird's text above
- Ancient Secondary Sources: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, edited by Thomas C. Oden. The whole set available on Scribd.com
Church History
- The Story of Christianity, by Justo L. Gonzalez, vol. 1: The Early Church to the Dawn of the Reformation, and vol. 2: The Reformation to the Present Day.
- Inventing the Individual, by Larry Siedentop
- The Evolution of the West: How Christianity Has Shaped Our Values, by Nick Spencer.
- Lecture series: History of Christianity I and II, by Sarah Williams.
- Video resources: Where did I Come From?: Christianity, Secularism and the Individual (and the Q&A) by Nick Spencer; and For the Love of God, a documentary on the church by CPX.
- On the history of Christian spirituality, which nicely supplements regular church histories, there's the History of Christian Spirituality (3 volumes), by Louis Bouyer; and, with a narrower focus, the more recent Dynamics of Spiritual Life: An Evangelical Theology of Renewal, by Richard F. Lovelace.
Life After Death
- What on Earth is Heaven? by james Paul (chap. 10: "What on earth happens to us when we die?" etc.)
- Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, by N. T. Wright.
New Creation
- A New Heaven and a New Earth: Reclaiming Biblical Eschatology, by J. Richard Middleton.
- What on Earth is Heaven? by james Paul
- Surprised by Hope, by N. T. Wright.
- An exploration of the Lord's "second coming."
- Other sources on what to expect in the new creation according to the Scriptures
